THE NEW BAR COURSE

By 2020, the Bar Courses will have largely displaced the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) as the vocational component of bar training. While course providers may use a variety of different terms to describe their programmes, it is crucial to note that all courses lead to the same end result - completion of the vocational component of bar training. Furthermore, bartending classes are referred to as:

• Bar/Barrister Training Course (BTC)

• Bar Practice Course (BPC)

• Bar Vocational Course (BVC)

• Bar Vocational Studies (BVS).

 

The BSB has authorised a number of institutions, known to as Authorised Education and Training Organizations (AETOs), to conduct Bar examinations. According to the Bar Standards Board (BSB), the revised qualifying criteria make legal training more flexible, accessible, and affordable than ever before. Additionally, the revisions broaden the pool of potential talent for the Bar by allowing students to choose between different routes to qualification.

 

WHAT IS CRIMINAL LITIGATION?

Criminal litigation is the study of the procedure rules behind the functioning of the criminal courts, how they are structured, and all matters pertaining to police and evidence rules.

 

WHAT WILL CRIMINAL LITIGATION ENTAIL?

Students will have to learn from Blackstones practice book, a compilation of all rules from all sources. Due to the lack of any centralized criminal procedure rule book, Blackstones contains law from many different sources, and oftentimes repeats itself, without a coherent narrative.

 

HOW A LAW TUTOR CAN HELP?
 

Criminal Litigation is the second most failed subject on the bar course. The reason for this rests primarily with sheer workload and volume of information, compounded by the very short amount of time available to digest it. There is 20 highly specific areas of criminal litigation and PACE, combined with criminal evidence (which is large enough that it is taught as a separate subject), all rolled into one exam out of 12 total assessments.

 

To ensure that you are given the correct information from the get-go (as opposed to reading and reading with no clarity), and are able to fully understand it, someone with knowledge and experience must give you the time.
